5 Steps to Take When Searching for an IT Company

Running a business is hard enough as it is, now you’re responsible for choosing an IT company. You know this is not a decision you want to make lightly, and without the hardware, security and maintenance of an efficient technology system your business can’t operate properly.

Herein lays the problem. You don’t know the first thing about IT. But fear not! With over 15 years of experience in the industry, we know a few things, so we’ve put together a checklist to help you find a reliable IT solution that best fits your needs.

1.Identify your Needs

Before making calls or interviewing companies, write down what you’re seeking an IT solutions expert for. Are you looking for someone to purchase equipment from? Or are you looking solely for services like network and equipment set-up, security monitoring or managed service solutions? Clearly identifying your needs will make the consultation process easier when you’re ready to meet with prospective IT partners.

2.Form a List

Put together a list of prospects to consider. Keep in mind prospects don’t always have to be on the top page of google to make it on the list. Feel free to add prospects that you’ve seen in recent ads or ones that were referred by a colleague. Try keeping your list under 10 potential prospects.

3.Research

Once you have a list of potential companies together start researching each one. Review their websites and see what services and products they’re offering. How long they’ve been in business? What training and expertise do their technicians and sales staff have? Make sure to look at their reviews as well. Although an occasional disgruntled client is to be expected, if they have frequent dissatisfied customers, that’s a flag to stay away.

4.Request a Consultation

Once your research is completed, review your findings and try narrowing your list down to the top 3 or 4 prospects. Now you can begin setting meeting with each. Prior to each meeting make sure to review each prospect and write down any questions you may have that weren’t answered during your research phase.

5.Interviews

Prior to each meeting make sure to have your compilation of needs, research and list of talking points and/or questions readily available for easy reference. Review these with each prospect so they have a clear understanding of what you’re looking for. Also, if you have a budget in mind be sure to share this as well.

You’ve identified your needs, done your research, interviewed potential candidates and now it’s time to make your final decision. Although there is no guaranteed formula for choosing an IT provider, if you’ve gone through the entire process above you will have gathered the information needed to help guide you to an informed decision.
